Rodent baffles, Chef Brian – tractor enthusiast, visit to another farm
On Sunday I saw a pheasant at the farm. Folks have told me they nest down by the Sammamish River Trail, but I’ve never seen one up on the farm. The blue heron is still visiting, but I don’t see it as often.
The other big news from Sunday is that Chef Brian’s long-awaited tractor finally arrived!
Chef Brian on his 1948 Ferguson tractor. Brian says this was his first time operating a tractor. I loaned him our disk and he was off and working.
On Monday I went on one of the Washington Tilth Producer’s farm walks. This one was at Andrew Stout’s Full Circle Farm. Andrew showed how he handles vegetables after harvest to maintain quality. We also looked at his transplant seedling methods and greenhouses and his field equipment collection (8 Allis Chalmers C’s!). We then toured his fields.
The cucumber seedlings are up in the starts greenhouse. They were on one of the metal tables and escaped the rodent snacking that devastated the watermelons and winter squash.
The leeks in the field are doing well. We’ll need to do the first weeding soon.
Enrique has been tilling yesterday and today. The rest of the crew has been painting the hayride wagon, which is now nearly finished.
